In Entrepreneurial Leap I create a vivid picture of two vastly different lives of an entrepreneur, one who is living the dream and one who is living the nightmare. Once you see the best-case and worst-case scenarios, you will be better able to avoid mistakes and get where you want to go faster.

First off, you must assume that you will make mistakes. Everyone does. In this Leap Lesson we will look at the fourth of the eight critical mistakes most entrepreneurs make along their journey. This is one more way to avoid living the entrepreneurial nightmare.

Mistake #4: Not Knowing Who Your Customer Is

As early in the process of taking your entrepreneurial leap as possible, you should determine the exact demographics and psychographics of your ideal customer. This is knowing exactly who they are, where they are, and what they are. You will then avoid taking a buckshot approach to marketing and falling into the trap of trying to attract everyone. You want to make sure you clearly know your customer so that you can speak their language in all your marketing and sales efforts, and only attract the ones you want.

Once you have determined who your customer is, be sure to communicate with them early, and often. Don’t make the mistake of assuming your customers are going to love your idea. Before creating any long-term plans, be sure to ask your customers for their honest feedback.

Next Steps

Take a few minutes right now and create an avatar of your customer. Be specific. Write down who they are, where they live, their interests, obstacles, worries, and fears.
